Let’s talk about potatoes

Tonight I have the very interesting and fun task of taste testing several varieties of heirloom potatoes from a local farm. I know what you’re thinking…”lucky duck..she gets to eat pounds of carbs”. But there is more to it than that.  Taste testing is fun yes, but it also requires some research, plenty of pots and pans, counter space, a willing dishwasher and a panel of trusted potato lovers. Lucky for me my daughter and husband are that panel (and dishwashers!).

Potatoes fascinate me, they are so simple yet can be so complex. Heirlooms in particular are wonderful, they have a depth of flavor that is unlike anything you will find in a grocery store potato.  Our farm is so small that we can’t grow potatoes in quantity so we just plant enough each year for us and a client or two.  This year we planted Purple Peruvian and loved them, they were vigorous, had great yields and were relatively trouble free. But it isn’t a great all-around potato.  See where I’m going with this?

It isn’t as easy at it seems to find the perfect varietal to plant, and what I might love the general public may loathe. Much depends on the preparation, the appearance, pest/disease resistance and its ability to thrive here in our area. Today I will do a bit of research into the varietals I have to test, photograph them and gather all my supplies. Each potato will be looked at from the inside out, they will be boiled, pan fried and roasted. My panel of testers will sample each and we will write our comments.

Being a foodie is an interesting adventure…

Have a fabulous Friday and do something delicious!
